  • Dry cough:
    • No mucus is present
    • Usually due to a minor irritation in the throat or larynx
  • Productive cough:
    • Mucus is present
    • Usually due to an infection
    • Can be blood-streaked in smokers with COPD
  • Acute cough:
    • New
    • Usually due to an infection
  • Chronic cough:
