Colitis Pseudomembranous Underlying Cause
Pseudomembranous colitis is caused by treatment with antibiotics. The antibiotics kill bacteria that normally grow in the intestine and colon, and allow a toxic bacteria, called Clostridium difficile, to grow. This bacterium produces a chemical that is toxic to the colon, resulting in irritation and inflammation of the colon.
