People with cold sores have a painful ulcer on the lips or skin surrounding the mouth. Cold sores are caused by an infection with a herpes virus.

A cold sores usually will heal without treatment within 2 weeks. About 90 percent of the population has been exposed to the herpes virus that causes cold sores.
