Facts about coccidioidomycosis:
  • There are about 100,000 cases of this lung infection each year in the United States.
  • Many of these cases occur in people with a weak immune system, such as AIDS.
  • Most cases are seen during the winter months.
  • About 8 percent of those infected develop severe lung disease requiring hospitalization.
  • About 7 percent of those infected develop infections that spread throughout the body.
