Chronic Lymphocytic Thyroiditis Underlying Cause

The exact cause of Hashimoto's thyroiditis is unknown, but it is considered to be an autoimmune disease. Hashimoto's thyroiditis results from an abnormal immune system, which normally fights infection. The immune system mistakenly attacks normal thyroid tissue, causing inflammation and destruction of the thyroid.
