A person with cholera has an infection of the intestines, caused by the bacteria, Vibrio cholerae. Cholera is a form of bacterial gastroenteritis. Cholera spreads by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Cholera infection causes severe diarrhea. Although cholera can be life threatening, it can be successfully treated with antibiotics.

What are the symptoms of cholera?
Symptoms of cholera may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping abdominal pain. Other symptoms include muscle aches and fever. Diarrheal stools are usually watery and severe. Symptoms of dehydration are common.

How does the doctor treat cholera?
Treatment for cholera may include intravenous fluids, clear liquid diet, antibiotics, and medications for vomiting and diarrhea.
