What is cholangitis?
A person with cholangitis has inflammation of the common bile duct, caused by a bacterial infection. The common bile duct drains bile from the gallbladder, and enzymes from the pancreas, into the small intestine. Inflammation of the duct can cause obstruction of the bile duct. Those who have gallstones or abnormal narrowing of the bile ducts are at risk for developing cholangitis.

What are the symptoms of cholangitis?
Common symptoms of cholangitis include jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, and fever.

How does the doctor treat cholangitis?
Treatment for cholangitis may include intravenous fluids and antibiotics. Some may be offered ERCP or surgery to relieve a bile duct obstruction.
