What is cholangiocarcinoma?
A person with cholangiocarcinoma has a growth of abnormal cells in the bile ducts that multiply out of control. These cells can form tumors and spread to other parts of the body. The cause of cholangiocarcinoma is unknown, but genetics may play a role in determining risk. Gallstones, chronic viral hepatitis, and cirrhosis do not appear to be factors in the development of cholangiocarcinoma. Those with ulcerative colitis or those who were born with abnormal bile ducts (e.g. bile duct cyst) are at higher risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Images

Symptoms of cholangiocarcinoma include loss of appetite, jaundice, brown urine, and abdominal pain. Images

How does the doctor treat cholangiocarcinoma?
Treatment for cholangiocarcinoma may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Images
