Most Chikungunya virus infections cause a mild, self-limited illness that starts within 2 weeks of an insect bite. Usually the symptoms last only 3 or 4 days.

The most common symptoms of Chikungunya disease include:

• Body aches
• Fever
• Chills
• Headache
• Joint pain

Symptoms of worsening Chikungunya disease include:

• Lymph node swelling
• Rash
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Severe joint pain
• Muscle cramps

Rare, severe symptoms of Chikungunya disease include:

• Confusion
• Fever over 103 degrees F (39.4 C)
• Lethargy:
• A condition of excessive sleepiness or drowsiness.
• Neck pain
• Neck stiffness
• Repeated vomiting
• Severe headache
• Rash (generalized)
• Rash that looks like bruises or broken blood vessels under the skin
