The evaluation of chemical burns begins with a medical history and physical. The specific chemical, its strength and the type of exposure are very important.

Physical findings in those with chemical burns may include:

• Skin redness
• Skin tenderness
• Blistering of the skin

Tests are usually not necessary to evaluate chemical burns unless a very large area is burned, or the burn is caused by a highly toxic chemical.
