A woman with cervical cancer has abnormal cells on the cervix that multiply out of control. These cells can form tumors and spread to other parts of the body. Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer in women. Cervical infection with human papillomavirus leads to cervical cancer. HPV is transmitted through sexual intercourse and causes genital warts.

What are the symptoms of cervical cancer?
Symptoms of cervical cancer may include heavy menstrual bleeding, irregular menstrual bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse, vaginal discharge, back pain and pelvic pain. Other symptoms include excessive fatigue and weight loss.

Treatment for cervical cancer depends on the degree to which the cancer has spread to surrounding tissues. Treatment measures include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
