A person with celiac sprue is unable to breakdown foods that contain gluten.

In those who have celiac sprue, the lining of the small intestine reacts abnormally to the gluten, which causes the intestine to become inflamed and swollen. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, oats, barley, and other grains. Celiac sprue is most common in children and young adults.
