A person with carbon monoxide poisoning has inhaled a toxic amount of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide prevents the blood from delivering oxygen to the tissues.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that is a byproduct of burning fuel or other materials. It is the leading cause of death by poisoning in the United States.
