Risk factors for bubonic plague include:
  • Camping, hiking, hunting, or fishing
  • Contact with an infected person
  • Contact with sick animals or rodents
  • Flea bite
  • Occupational exposure: researcher, veterinarian
  • Presence of a food source for rodents in the immediate vicinity of the home
  • Residing in areas where plague occurs, such as the Southwestern United States
