Bronchopulmonary dysplasia seems to be caused by poorly developed, or damaged, lungs that occur during development of the fetus.

The lungs absorb oxygen from the air and pass it into the bloodstream for use by the rest of the body. The lungs also pass carbon dioxide from the bloodstream to the air as a waste product. Small air pockets in the lungs transfer oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air and small blood vessels.
