The evaluation of bronchitis begins with a complete history and physical examination.

Physical findings in those with bronchitis may include:

• Low blood oxygen levels
• Rapid respiratory rate
• Wheezing
• Fever
• Signs of severe difficulty breathing:
• Rib retractions
• Nasal flaring
• Use of accessory muscles

The diagnosis of bronchitis can be made without testing. Tests may be performed to exclude other illnesses, or to determine the severity of bronchitis.

Tests that may be used to evaluate bronchitis include:

• Complete blood count
• Pulse oximetry
• Chest x-ray
• Arterial blood gas
• Pulmonary function tests
• Sputum cultures
