What is bronchiolitis?
A child with bronchiolitis has inflammation of the small air passageways in the lungs, caused by a viral infection. The respiratory syncytial virus is the most common cause for bronchiolitis. Bronchiolitis is most common in children who are less than 6 months of age.

Bronchiolitis is common in infants, causing cough, breathing difficulty, rapid breathing, wheezing, and increased mucus production.

How does the doctor treat bronchiolitis?
Treatment for bronchiolitis may include oxygen therapy, oral corticosteroids, and bronchodilator medications. Some may benefit from the administration of antiviral medications.
