A person with a femur fracture has broken the large bone in the thigh. The femur, or thigh bone, begins at the hip and ends at the knee. The femur is the largest bone in the body. A hip fracture describes a fracture of the femur near the hip joint.

What are the symptoms of a femur fracture?
Symptoms of a femur fracture may include thigh pain, groin pain, hip pain, knee pain, hip swelling, thigh swelling, and knee swelling. Other symptoms include thigh tenderness, bruising of the thigh, thigh deformity, leg shortening, and inability to move the leg or stand without severe pain.

How does the doctor treat a femur fracture?
The treatment for a femur fracture includes rest, cold compresses, walker or crutches, pain medications, and surgery to repair the fracture. A cast or splint is usually required.
