Blue diaper syndrome is a rare hereditary disease. An abnormal gene does not allow for the absorption of the amino acid, tryptophan. Instead, bacteria break down the tryptophan into chemicals, which are then absorbed by the intestine. These chemicals pass into the urine and turn the urine blue.
