Bloody Sputum Overview

Another name for Bloody Sputum is Hemoptysis.

What is hemoptysis?
A person with hemoptysis is coughing up blood from the lungs. Many blood vessels lie under the inside surface of the lung tissue. Injury, infection or inflammation can irritate the blood vessels and cause hemoptysis. Causes of hemoptysis include injury, infection, or inflammation.

What are the symptoms of hemoptysis?
Symptoms of hemoptysis depend on the underlying cause. Symptoms may include coughing up blood-streaked mucus, persistent cough, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, fatigue, fever, hoarseness, loss of appetite, and weight loss.

How does the doctor treat hemoptysis?
Treatment of hemoptysis depends on the underlying cause. Treatment may include antibiotics, bronchoscopy, bronchial artery embolization, laser therapy, or surgery.
