Blood Thinner Medication Bleeding Nosebleed

Nosebleeds are a common complication of anticoagulant use.

How to stop a nosebleed:

  • Sit upright.
  • Pinch the nose firmly and constantly for 15 minutes. Repeat once if the bleeding does not stop.
  • Breathe through your mouth.
  • Drink cold water to clear blood from your throat.
  • Seek medical care if the bleeding does not stop in 30 minutes.

Strategies for preventing a nosebleed from recurring include:
  • Stop smoking.
  • Avoid drinking hot liquids.
  • Do not take aspirin for at least one week.
  • Do not place anything in your nose once the bleeding has stopped.
  • Do not blow your nose for at least 2 days.
