The evaluation of blepharitis begins with a medical history and eye examination.

Physical findings in those with blepharitis include:

• Swelling and redness of the eyelid edges
• Scaly eyelids
• Misdirection of eyelashes
• Scarring of the lid margins
• Thick coating on the lids
• Ulcers at the base of the eyelashes
• A painless, swollen lump in the eyelid

The diagnosis of a blepharitis does not require testing.
