Facts about the cause of bladder infection:
  • Bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract cause the great majority of bladder infections, but fungi may also cause bladder infections.
  • Usually, the bacteria spread from the rectum, enter the urethra, spread through the urethra and enter the bladder. Once the organisms reach the bladder, they start to grow.
