What is urinary incontinence?
A person with urinary incontinence is unable to control the bladder, which results in accidental leaking of urine from the bladder. Urinary incontinence may be triggered by actions that increase pressure within the abdomen, such as laughing, sneezing, or coughing. Common causes of urinary incontinence in women include urinary tract infections and uterine prolapse. Common causes of urinary incontinence in men include an enlarged prostate and prostatitis. About 17 million people in the US have urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence is much more common in women.
What are the symptoms of urinary incontinence?
Symptoms of urinary incontinence include accidental loss of urine from the bladder, an increased urge to urinate, and increased urinary frequency. A person with urinary incontinence may also experience low back pain.
How does the doctor treat urinary incontinence?
Treatment for urinary incontinence may include behavioral therapy, Kegel exercises, medication, surgery, or electrical stimulation of the muscles that control the flow of urine.
