Evaluation of an infant with biliary atresia begins with a medical history and physical examination.

Physical findings in infants with biliary atresia may include:

• Jaundice
• Enlargement of the liver
• Enlargement of the spleen

Tests are required, in order to make the diagnosis of biliary atresia.

Tests that may be used to evaluate biliary atresia include:

• Serum bilirubin level
• ERCP
• Cholangiogram
• Liver biopsy
• Abdominal x-rays
• Chest x-ray:
• Normal chest x-rays
• Intestinal perforation
• CT scanning of the abdomen: an excellent test for excluding internal injury
• MRI scan of the abdomen
• Ultrasound of the abdomen
