Beriberi Definition

A person with beriberi has a deficiency of vitamin B1, or thiamin. Beriberi mainly affects the heart and nervous system. There are two forms of this condition: wet beriberi and dry beriberi. Wet beriberi causes heart failure. Dry beriberi causes damage to nerves.
