The evaluation of bacterial pharyngitis begins with a history and physical examination.

Physical findings in those with bacterial pharyngitis include:

• A normal-appearing throat
• A red throat and tonsils
• Swollen tonsils
• Pus or discharge on the tonsils
• Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

Tests are often necessary to confirm the diagnosis of bacterial pharyngitis.

Testing for bacterial pharyngitis may include:

• Rapid strep test:
• A quick screening test for strep throat
• Complete blood count
• Monospot
• Throat culture:
• Detects various bacteria within 1-2 days

A rapid strep test may be performed to detect strep throat in those with a sore throat and 2 or more of the following:

• Fever
• Swollen neck glands
• Exudates (pus) on the throat or tonsils
• Sorethroat, but no cough
