An evaluation of babesiosis begins with a medical history and physical examination.

Tests are required to make the diagnosis of babesiosis.

Tests that may be used to evaluate babesiosis include:

• Pulse oximetry
• Blood electrolytes
• Complete blood count
• Liver function tests:
• Mild elevations in liver enzymes
• Lyme titers
• To exclude Lyme disease
• Immunofluorescence studies for direct detection of antibody to Babesiosis
• Urinalysis
• Chest x-ray
