What is autism?
A child with autism has a severe developmental disorder that is usually discovered before the age of three. Children who have autism have difficulty with social interaction, have a narrow range of interests and display repetitive behaviors. Most children who have autism suffer from some degree of mental retardation. The cause for autism is unknown, but genetics may play a role in determining susceptibility. There is no scientific evidence that autism is caused by childhood vaccinations.

What are the symptoms of autism?
Symptoms of autism include a wide range of behavioral abnormalities including: abnormal speech, avoidance of eye-to-eye contact, dislike of being held, communication problems, obsession with one topic or idea, plays alone, repeats phrases, and repetitive rocking.

How does the doctor treat autism?
General measures for autism include educational support, counseling, and medications to reduce anxiety, aggressive behavior, or repetitive behaviors. Some have recommended a gluten-free diet.
