A woman with atrophic vaginitis has thinning and inflammation of the lining of the vagina that is usually associated with menopause. Images

In menopause, estrogen levels decrease in the bloodstream and this can lead to changes in the vaginal mucosa. Some women may develop mild atrophic vaginitis when breastfeeding because estrogen levels are lower than normal at this time.
