An evaluation of atrial myxoma begins with a medical history and physical examination.

Usually, the physical examination in those with atrial myxoma is normal.

Physical findings may include:

• Examination of the heart may reveal a classic tumor plop sound the tumor makes when it moves.

Tests are required to make the diagnosis of atrial myxoma.

Tests that may be used to evaluate atrial myxoma include:

• Pulse oximetry
• Blood electrolytes
• Cardiac enzymes
• Troponin levels
• Thyroid profile
• Coagulation profile
• Chest x-ray
• Echocardiogram
• Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)
• Cardiac monitoring
• Thallium heart scan
• Ventilation perfusion lung scan may be performed to exclude pulmonary embolism as an underlying cause.
• Cardiac catheterization
