The evaluation of asphyxiant inhalations begins with a medical history and physical examination.

Physical findings in those with an asphyxiant inhalation may include:

• Wheezing
• Cardiac arrhythmias
• Confusion or coma
• Cyanosis
• Increased rate of breathing
• Signs of severe difficulty breathing
• Rib retractions
• Nasal flaring
• Use of accessory muscles

Tests are only necessary if someone has signs of brain injury due to lack of oxygen.

Tests used to evaluate asphyxiant inhalations may include:

• Pulse oximetry
• Arterial blood gas analysis
• Chest x-ray
• Cardiac monitoring
• Electrocardiogram
