Evaluation of asbestosis begins with a complete history and physical examination.

Physical findings in those with asbestosis may include:

• Cyanosis
• Low blood oxygen levels
• Rapid respiratory rate
• Wheezing

Testing is required to make the diagnosis of asbestosis.

Tests for asbestosis may include:

• Chest x-ray:
• Normal chest x-ray
• Signs of chronic lung disease or fibrosis may be present
• Arterial blood gas
• Pulse oximetry
• Pulmonary function tests with response to bronchodilator medications
• Bronchoscopy
• Lung biopsy
