A person with asbestosis has inflammation and damage to the lung, caused by an industrial chemical, called asbestos. The inflammation and damage can cause coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. Overtime the lungs can be scarred by pulmonary fibrosis.

Prolonged exposure to asbestos can increase the risk of lung cancer (mesothelioma).
