What is aplastic anemia?
A person with aplastic anemia has a low blood count, caused by a failure of the bone marrow to make blood cells. It results in decreased production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen, white blood cells fight infection, and platelets form blood clots. A decrease in these blood cells can result in fatigue, infection, and abnormal bleeding.

Symptoms of aplastic anemia may include dizziness, excessive fatigue, faintness, muscle weakness, pale skin, excessive bleeding, rashes, palpitations, and shortness of breath with exertion.

How does the doctor treat aplastic anemia?
Treatment for aplastic anemia may include vitamin B supplements, blood transfusion, corticosteroid medications, and bone marrow transplant.
