A person with ankylosing spondylitis has inflammation of the vertebrae that causes the vertebrae to grow together, or fuse. This results in decreased range of motion of the spine. The spine becomes stiff and movement becomes painful. Images

Ankylosing spondylitis begins between the ages of 20 and 40 years. There is no cure for ankylosing spondylitis.
