The evaluation of an ankle injury begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in those with an ankle injury may include:

• Ankle bruising
• Ankle deformity
• Ankle pain with movement
• Ankle tenderness
• Difficulty walking
• Inability to walk

Tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis.

Tests that may be used to evaluate an ankle injury include:

• X-ray of the ankle:
• Normal ankle x-rays
• Ankle fracture
• MRI of the ankle
• Nuclear bone scan
