Home care for an ankle
contusion
includes:
Apply a cold compress:
Wrap ice in a moist hand towel. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
Apply for 20-30 minutes, every 1-2 hours, for the first few days.
Apply an ACE wrap to the ankle.
Unwrap and re-wrap the ankle several times a day to reduce
swelling
.
Elevate the ankle.
Elevation above your heart will reduce
swelling
.
Rest the ankle until pain is gone.
Use a cane.
Use crutches.
Increase activity gradually without causing pain.
Acetaminophen
for pain
Ibuprofen
for pain
