Ankle Contusion Home Care
Home care for an ankle contusion includes:
  • Apply a cold compress:
    • Wrap ice in a moist hand towel. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
    • Apply for 20-30 minutes, every 1-2 hours, for the first few days.
  • Apply an ACE wrap to the ankle. VideosImages
    • Unwrap and re-wrap the ankle several times a day to reduce swelling.
  • Elevate the ankle.
    • Elevation above your heart will reduce swelling.
  • Rest the ankle until pain is gone.
    • Use a cane.
    • Use crutches.
    • Increase activity gradually without causing pain.
