The evaluation of angioedema begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in those with angioedema may include:

• Facial swelling
• Lip swelling
• Mouth or tongue swelling
• Urticaria

Testing is necessary to determine the underlying cause for angioedema.

Tests for angioedema may include:

• Complete blood count
• Serum C1 esterase level
• Allergy testing may include one or more of the following:
• Aquagenic: tests for a reaction to water
• Delayed Pressure: tests for a reaction placing pressure on the skin
• Dermatographism: tests for a reaction to scraping the skin
• Ice-Cube test: tests for a reaction to cold
• Methacholine test: tests for a reaction to exercise
• Skin testing: small amounts of allergens are injected into the skin
