A person with anemia has a reduced number of red blood cells in the bloodstream. Images

Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, which is a molecule that carries oxygen. A decrease in the number of red blood cells reduces the amount of oxygen that can be carried by the bloodstream. This can result in poor exercise tolerance and fatigue. There are many different types of anemia.
