Air Embolism Prevention: Cardiac Screening
Up to 1 out of every 4 people has a tiny heart defect called patent foramen ovale. This is a connection between the left and right heart. It allows blood to flow from the right to the left heart without being filtered by the lungs. A patent foramen ovale increases the chance of stroke by ten times. People with this disorder should not engage in scuba activities.

An echocardiogram can detect patent foramen ovale.
