A person with adult respiratory distress syndrome has severe damage to the lungs that causes fluid to build up in the lung tissue. The fluid prevents the lungs from transferring oxygen into the bloodstream.

With treatment, about 50% of those with adult respiratory distress syndrome die from the disease.
