What is adenomyosis?
A woman with adenomyosis has abnormal thickening of the lining to the uterus. As the thickening worsens, the lining invades the deeper layers of the uterus, resulting in vaginal bleeding. Images

Common symptoms of adenomyosis include heavy vaginal bleeding, irregular vaginal bleeding, and lower abdominal pain. Additional symptoms of adenomyosis include pain during intercourse and bleeding in between periods. Images

How does the doctor treat adenomyosis?
Treatment for adenomyosis usually includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, narcotic pain medications, and hormone therapy. In some women, a hysterectomy may be a treatment option for adenomyosis.
