A person with an acute dystonic reaction has severe muscle spasms, caused by medications used to treat schizophrenia. A dystonic reaction may cause spasms of the muscles in the neck, face and limbs.

About 3 to 10 percent of patients who take medication for schizophrenia develop an acute dystonic reaction. With treatment, acute dystonic reactions resolve.
