A person with actinomycosis has a rare infection, caused by Actinomyces bacteria. This infection can occur in the face, jaw, neck, chest, abdomen or lung.

Actinomycosis is not contagious: the bacteria are present normally in the nose and throat. The infection may require long-term treatment with antibiotics. With early treatment, the infection resolves completely.
