The evaluation of an Achilles tendon rupture begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with an Achilles tendon rupture include:

• Calf tenderness
• Foot weakness
• Swelling over Achilles tendon
• Tenderness over Achilles tendon
• Calf pain:
• With movement of the ankle joint

Tests are usually not necessary to make the diagnosis of an Achilles tendon rupture.

Tests that may be used to evaluate an Achilles tendon rupture include:

• Ankle x-rays
• MRI of the lower leg, ankle or foot
