The evaluation of Achilles tendinitis begins with a medical history and physical examination.

Physical findings in someone with Achilles tendinitis may include:

• Warmth over Achilles tendon
• Swelling over Achilles tendon
• Tenderness over Achilles tendon
• Redness to the skin overlying the Achilles tendon
• Pain with range of motion in ankle joint

Tests are usually not necessary to make the diagnosis of achilles tendinitis.

Tests that may be used to evaluate Achilles tendinitis include:

• Ankle x-rays
• Ankle or foot MRI
