Acanthamoeba Infection Underlying Cause
Acanthamoeba live in the soil and in warm fresh water, such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs. These organisms may also grow in hot tubs, chlorinated swimming pools, air conditioning units, and humidifiers. Acanthamoeba enter the skin through a wound, or enter through the nostrils. Once inside the body, amoeba can spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body.
