Abrasion of the Scalp Overview
What is an abrasion of the scalp?
A person with an abrasion of the scalp has a scratch or scrape to the skin on the scalp. A superficial abrasion removes only the outermost layer of skin. A deep abrasion may remove all of the skin layers. Normally, the skin is a natural barrier to bacteria on the skin surface. When layers of skin are removed, a skin infection may occur.
What are the symptoms of an abrasion of the scalp?
Symptoms of a scalp abrasion include minor bleeding, pain around the abrasion, and skin tenderness.
How does the doctor treat an abrasion of the scalp?
Superficial scalp abrasions can be treated safely at home. Treatment includes cleansing the wound gently, removing dirt, applying antibiotic ointment, and covering the wound with a bandage. Large or deep abrasions of the scalp may require tetanus immunization and surgery.
