Home care for abdominal swelling includes:
  • Apply heat to the abdomen:
    • Heating pad
    • Hot water bottle
    • Warm baths
  • Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen.
  • Avoid spicy foods and caffeine.
  • Avoid enemas and laxatives.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol.
  • Avoid gas-forming foods.
  • Avoid overeating.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Avoid exposure to secondary smoke.
  • Avoid milk and dairy products.
  • Do not lie down after eating.
  • Limit carbonated drinks.
  • Take prescription medications as directed.
